Proud of our palm oil
Palm oil is a sustainable choice if it is responsibly sourced. As the world’s highest yielding vegetable oil crop, palm needs less than half the land required by other crops to produce the same amount of oil. Switching to a different oil would require more land. Encouraging growers only to use sustainable farming methods, and buying RSPO certified palm oil will help to stop deforestation, destruction of habitats and exploitation of people.
David Attenborough summed this up nicely:
“The balance between our needs and conservation is hard, but we can offer a vital lifeline for our forest relatives. We may be able to protect them through simple choices, like buying products made with deforestation-free, sustainable palm oil from companies that support local people, using existing plantations, without cutting down more rainforest.”
Committed to sustainable palm oil production
AAK – the company behind the Prep brand, has been involved in the drive towards sustainable palm oil for over 20 years. This is because, with a growing global population, we believe that palm oil will be crucial in meeting future food demand, as well providing a substitute for products that are more harmful to the environment.
RSPO sustainable palm oil
RSPO sustainable palm oil has been farmed, processed, distributed, and sold responsibly, in line with strict rules that protect animals, the environment and people who live and work in palm oil producing countries.
It has involved:
- Halting deforestation
- Treating communities and workers fairly
- Protecting wildlife and the environment
Today, when population growth and climate change pose unprecedented threats to global food security, palm oil has an important part to play in relieving this pressure.
United Kingdom Deforestation Regulation (UKDR) – what it means for your business.
Legislation, introduced through the Environment Act, sets out to ensure that products on our supermarket shelves have not been produced on land linked to illegal deforestation.**
When enacted, businesses that have a global annual turnover of over £50 million and use over 500 tonnes of palm oil, cocoa, beef, leather and soy, will be:
- Prohibited from using illegally produced forest risk commodities – including both raw and derived products
- Required to establish a due diligence system for each regulated commodity
- Obliged to report annually on their due diligence exercise, and parts of their reports will be published to ensure transparency.
It’s still great to know therefore, that the palm oil in your Prep high performance frying oil, is RSPO certified and has not contributed to deforestation. In fact, all the palm oil we supply from our UK refinery, is sustainably sourced and fully traceable.
If your business is in scope, you can depend on AAK to work closely with you to meet the due diligence reporting requirements of the new legislation.
